PHUMALANGA
Phumalanga watches the rising African sun in bright orange colours over the heads of the
Ngwenya Mountains, also in Southern Africa the sun is usually rising in the East.
To the Swazi the meaning of Phumalanga is exactly "East".

On the top of one of these mountains about 40 Swazi women are working in the workshop
of Endlotane studios. From this high point one can see the valley of Motjane river
stretching far into the distance of the country. Behind the Mountain hights lies the Game Reserve
called Malolotja. Between the workshop and the game reserve Yawns the red crater of the
iron ore open cast mine once belonging to Anglo American Company,
A step aside Hidden on the slope of the mountain a forty thousand year old mine belonging
to the first inhabitants of this region. Compared with the Anglo American mine it looks
just like a mouse hole

In this surrounding full of history and the primeval bold heads of the Ngwenya mountains are the tapestries originated woven out of Mohair Merino Wool, Karakul or other interesting fibbers.
The designs for these tapestries are stimulated by the ancient rock paintings of the San people
who were hunting about 10 000 years ago the Springboks the Antelope and the Eland.
Secondly The flora and fauna of this are with their remarkable forms are being cast into
contemporary designs for tapestries of high quality and of artistic value.
Added to theirs designs are Swazi Ethnic tapestries derived from the patterns in the older Swazi Emahiya, large sized wall hangings done after the own ideas of the artist Albert Christoph Reck
