Locally Crafted Silver Jewellery Likhweti Kraft, located in the Peak Fine Craft Centre, is the third outlet of the locally based company, Tintsaba Crafts. For more than 15 years, Tintsaba has been committed to the rural women in the Northern Hhohho region of Swaziland, focussing on the production of fine quality crafts. Over the years, the
company's projects have evolved beyond basketry, to include natural jewellery
and now also silver jewellery. While some of the
silver designs portray the traditions, beliefs and artwork of the Swazi
people, others illustrate images from other African cultures. Jewellery
pieces in the Coiling Range are made using the same traditional technique
used in weaving Swazi sisal baskets. This range integrates silver with the sisal disks produced by local women. The intricately patterned disks are framed in 925 silver and used in earrings, necklaces and as pendants. Many of the patterns woven in sisal are also mimicked in silver, yielding a distinctive blend of traditional and modern. In addition to the silver collection, Likhweti boasts a variety of handmade crafts, some from Tintsaba's development project as well as others from craft producers based in Swaziland and other parts of Africa. The shop is open daily from 8 am through 5 pm. |
