OLD WOMAN KILLED BY OGRE AFTER
HIDING IT FROM HUNTERS

oldwomanA long time ago when ogres lived in the same neighbourhood as men there existed bad blood between the two neighbours. It was not easy for both as there was no trust between them. For the human beings, the ogres were half human, half monsters that could destroy their livelihood at any time. They destroyed their livestock and their crops and the general feeling among the humans was to hunt the ogres down and kill annihilate them completely.

The continous hunting adventures made the ogres to be wary of human beings. They looked at the as enemies and given any little opportunity, they would always pounce on the livestock and crops belonging to the human beings.

In one village, the relationship became so tense that at one moment, ogres only ventured out of their hideouts to hunt at night. It was not easy as most ogres have one eye and it was difficult for them to focus in the darkness.

Some of them became so weak because of hunger that they just could not get out to hunt for their food anymore. Because of the bad relationship that existed, it was even difficult for the ogres to organise a meeting with human beings to sort out the misunderstandings as their always feared for their lives.

Each time the ogres found lone human beings wandering about in the forest, they would always pounce on them and maybe have a meal for a while. The human beings would retaliate once they found out that one of them had been killed and would go into the forest to flush out the ogres from their hideouts and kill quite a number of them.

At one moment, the whole situation degenerated into a witch hunt that the human beings did not know when it was safe for them to work in their gardens. Some of the gardens were scattered in far away places and it was always not easy to keep an eye on all the people who had innocently gone out to work.

Because of these problems, human beings called a meeting where they discussed the dangers that stalked them each time they either went out to their gardens or took their animals out to the grazing fields.

They decided that each time they went out to the gardens, they would go in a group so that it was possible to defend those who were attacked. And each time they took their animals to the grazing fields, it was important that they go in a group so that it was easy to defend themselves in case of an attack.

One ogre hid itself on the edge of the forest listening to the resolutions that were being taken. It had gone to this hiding place often to just admire the healthy human beings while the other ogres died of hunger because they could not hunt during the day.

When the ogre took the news to the leader, they too convened a meeting at night and decided that they had to change their tactics if they had to survive. The best thing to do under those circumstances would be to take on the human beings without any fear.

The following few days saw a number of confrontations where both ogres and human beings were hurt. Some of the human beings who had been brace enough to go close to their adversaries were mauled by the tired ogres and their was no doubt that something had to be done to stop a similar confrontation.

There was this secret meeting where human beings decided that they had to flush out these animals out of their hideouts and kill all of them. Since this decision was taken in a secret meeting, the ogres were taken by surprise and on the first night of the attack, many were killed.

The ogres thought the human beings will attack again the following night and stayed alert but nothing came. This happened for a number of nights and eventually, the ogres, counting their losses thought the human beings had eventually decided that the punishment they had meted to them was enough.

But as soon as they relaxed, the human beings struck again. The male ogres that went out to fight were killed because it was difficult for them to see at night. The human beings launched another attack and killed the remaining ogres. Those that remained were scattered all over the forest and were no where near the village.

There was one ogre that remained hiding itself in a cave when the rest were killed. It could come out at night and scavenge for food in the village because no one was suspecting that there was anymore danger. After realising that the village was so relaxed, the ogre started to take chickens and then goats and sheep. People were surprised at the disappearance of their livestock and at one meeting they thought that there was a human thief who was stealing the animals.

But one day, after a heavy downpour, the ogre forgot that it could leave its footsteps in the mud and went to the village to hunt. It captured a goat and went back to the forest to its hideout. After a good meal, it left early in the morning to a far away place. The human beings saw the footsteps and followed them into the forest and got to the cave. They ransacked the place but the ogre was not there. So they hid in the surrounding bushed and waited for it. It did not come back that night and the men just lay in wait. When it did finally turn up, it was the following day and all of the men came out of their hiding places to pursue it.

The ogre knew that there was danger and turned back to ran. The men came after in hot pursuit and at one moment, they thought they had surrounded it. The ogre found a woman working in garden and asked her to hide it. It promised that it would not be of any danger and if the hunters came by, the old woman was supposed to tell them that it had passed by. The woman trusted the ogre and hid it in a pile of dry leaves. When the men came hot in pursuit, and asked the woman whether she had seen the ogre, she merely pointed to the bush, saying it had past by running very fast.

The men followed and after they had been gone for a while, the ogre came out of its hiding place and without blinking its eyelid, told the old woman that it would eat her. She was surprised at this turn of events but the ogre lived up to its promise and ate her up. When the hunters came back, they saw blood and quickly imagined what had happened.
